Read A Story project
A very novel & unique skill-building initiative from Read-a-story, a N+One NGO supported by
multiple CSRs, foundations, trusts and individual donors, hopes to improve reading and spoken
English in the underserved regions of India.
A volunteer in the city will help read with the child over a mobile cellular network. Both sides of
the line have the same book. The child has a hard copy, and the volunteer has a digital copy. This
program helps in building a foundation for Spoken English during early school days. Rotary Club
of Pune Metro has absolutely liked the approach and has joined the initiative with a good start
of 20 members signing up for the initiative to become volunteering tutors and help empower these
rural kids with the power of spoken English. We intend to grow with the initiative with many more
members showing interest.
The program is currently operational in Talasari Taluka in the Palghar district. It’s about 140 km
from Mumbai, located near the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. It is one of the most poverty-stricken
and backward districts in Maharashtra. Poor education is one of the many other ongoing issues
faced by the locals who are largely a community of tribal folks engaged in farming or fishing for
their daily livelihood.
Talasari has a population of close to 1,55,000 mostly tribals, living in over 21,500 households
across 185 villages and 21 panchayats. The area has a lower literacy rate in comparison to the
average prevailing in the state of Maharashtra and the lowest in the district of Palghar. In 2011,
the literacy rate of Talasari village was 44.80 % compared to 82.34 % in Maharashtra. In Talasari
male literacy stands at 56.55 % while the female literacy rate was 33.35 %.
RCPM & its family members are very proud to stand up for the cause and make a difference for
these young beginners and help them to grow with the confidence and power of spoken English to
achieve their dreams & form a strong & better society for themselves.
